From Prompting to Systems
The spectrum from one-off prompt to organisational capability
- Duration
- Half-day (foundations) or full-day (foundations + workshop on a real internal workflow)
- Mode
- In-person strongly preferred for the workflow design segments · fully remote possible
- Group size
- 6 to 18 — the design work needs intimacy
- For
- Teams already using AI who want to use it well
Most teams hit a wall around the same place. Prompting works for one-off tasks. But for repeatable work, for things that need to scale, for processes that involve multiple people — prompting alone isn't enough.
There's a spectrum that runs from one-off prompt to organisational capability, and most people don't know it exists. This workshop walks teams through it. By the end, attendees know which step they're on, which step is next, and how to make the move — without losing judgment along the way.
The arc of the workshop. Adapted to the room and the time available.
- 01
The spectrum
Six layers: prompt → reusable prompt → chain → automation → assistant → system. What each one solves, what it doesn't, and what the structural shift between layers actually is.
- 02
The four-beat pattern
Notice friction → make the implicit explicit → test and refine → encode and reuse. The same rhythm runs through every layer.
- 03
Layer 1-2 — Prompts and reusable prompts
The craft of being specific. How to design a prompt you'd be willing to share with your team — and what changes when you do.
- 04
Layer 3-4 — Chains and automations
Multi-step work that holds together. Where you belong in the process and where you don't. Designing handoffs and human checkpoints.
- 05
Layer 5-6 — Assistants and systems
Persistent role, context, and quality bar. Encoding expertise — not just process — into something that scales beyond the individual.
- 06
Mapping your work
Attendees pick a real workflow from their team and map it against the spectrum. We design a first reusable prompt or chain together, in the room.
- 07
The judgment call
Knowing when to go further and when to keep it simple. Not everything needs to be a system. Some things are fine as prompts.
- Working knowledge of the prompt → system spectrum
- A specific real workflow from your team mapped against the spectrum
- A first reusable prompt or chain designed and tested in the room
- A diagnostic for knowing when to stay at one layer vs. move up
- Shared vocabulary for talking about AI work across your team
Teams already using AI day-to-day who feel they've plateaued — getting decent outputs but not building anything that scales beyond individual use. Particularly useful for operations, knowledge work, and any team with repeatable processes where AI could carry more weight.
